They had several calendars. There was a solar calendar of 365 days and a religious calendar of 260 days. These two calendars combined to give a sequence of 52 years (the Calendar Round). In order to specify dates over a longer span than 52 years, the Long Count was introduced with a suitable distant starting date of 3114 BCE, before the Mayan civilsation. It wasn’t a solar calendar or related to any natural sequence, just a count of days in suitable blocks of round numbers of 20 and 18.
All that happens in 2012 is the completion of a period of 20 x 18 x 20 x 20 days (144,000 days or 394 years). Any aver that the Mayans made a prediction of doomsday associated with this calendar if fake.
