Most of the major Mayan pyramids sites have spectacular Mayan pyramids that visitors can explore. The best known of the Mayan pyramids and certainly among the most popular is the pyramid of Kukulcan at Chichen-Itza; approximately 2 hours from Cancun. This site offers one of the best preserved Mayan pyramids in the Mayan empire. It incorporates a complex arrangement of adjacent structures that provide modern days tourist/explorers every opportunity to climb and investigate every nook and cranny of the pyramid and its surrounding structures, including the observatory, courtyards, ball courts  and nearby cenotes; very large circular limestone sinkholes that were used as cisterns by the Maya. Kukulcan is the Mayan snake-god. If you happen upon it at the right time of day you will note that the staircase is constructed so that a representation of a great serpent appears on it in the right light. You will have an opportunity to climb the 365 steps and explore the temple at the top.
